After welcoming the New Year, we are gearing up for the next big festival u2013 Pongal. This season of harvest is welcomed with three days of celebration. Pongal is also known as Bhogi Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Surya Pongal and is dedicated to the Hindu Sun God u2013 Surya. Pookolam (rangoli made with flowers) is the most significant tradition that is followed while celebrating Pongal. Beautiful Pookolam designs are made with flowers to make the house festival ready.

Pookolam is an intricate and colourful arrangement of flowers laid on the floor. Pookolam is comprised of two words, u2018poovu2019 meaning flower and u2018kolamu2019 means colour sketches on the ground. It is considered auspicious to prepare Pookolam, also known as Aththa-Pookolam. Originally, Pookolamdesigns consist of ten small round steps. The ten steps or rings are believed to represent ten different deities in Hinduism.

Unlike many who find it easy to work from home, itu2019s not been easy for me. I cannot really do much from my own house other than write and give advice and of course redo and redecorate as much as possible without killing the husband and children

While pottering around my home, Iu2019ve realized and appreciated how much my home is surrounded by memories and how these memories have calmed me and made me appreciate life and time even more. Every home has memories; some you bring and some you create. Without this your house may be magazine worthy; beautiful but cold.

When you look at an old photo or see a souvenir you can go back in date, time and place for certain events. Psychologists call this an individualu2019s semantic memory. However, walking around my home I can do much more than that. I can relive it as if were from inside with the smells, sights and sounds u2013 every sensory moment in detail.

Every home has a design influence and mine is a combination of my childhood memories along with travel. My childhood home is a collectoru2019s delight and it is my mother who taught me to love the eclectic. To admire the hand woven basket as much as the Wedgewood tea set (if not more!).

As soon as summer is over, do a round around the house and check for any cracks in the walls. Grab a ladder and go over every little detail of your ceiling before the rain starts to pour. Water can easily seep through the ceiling and ruin furniture like your beds and sofa sets.

You can use lacquer or white cement and seal any cracks in the walls and ceilings to avoid damaging your home interiors. Your water worries donu2019t end there. Water can sometimes enter through your windows even though they are shut. If you notice this happening, you can insulate the windows with a rubber lining to stop the rain from leaking into your home

Avoid Flooding the Floor

Wooden flooring needs extra care during monsoons due to high moisture levels in the atmosphere. Do not polish the floor with varnish as the moisture will prevent it from drying. You can wipe the floor with a dry cloth and spread silica gel across the floor to avoid any swelling in the wood.

Camphor and naphthalene balls are excellent moisture absorbers as well. Expensive carpets and rugs are also important aspects of interior du00e9cor. Roll them up and replace them with quick-drying mats to avoid ruining them. Water is an excellent conductor of electricity and any wiring exposed to rain can prove to be fatal. Unattended wires and uninsulated cords need to be covered immediately to prevent short-circuiting your power supply during monsoons.
